This painting is a tribute to Sybile, Queen of the fairies, a supernatural seductress, leader of the earth and nature spirits who dwell in an another realm.
She shows up in numerous folktales and has been conflated with the Roman goddess Venus, and with the Norse goddesses Frigg and Freya: Frigg being mothering and chaste while Freya is magical and erotic.
It is in the story of Tannhäuser which takes place in 13th century Germany (and made into an opera by Wagner) that she shows up most vividly. In this story, she is a fairy queen who lives in the Mountain of Venus and seduces the young Knight Tannhäuser who stumbles into her world.
She is a goddess of sensuality and sexuality, creativity and nature, nurturing and abundance.
